The Messerschmitt Bf109 is undoubtedly the most famous and successful German fighter of the Second World War, it was also the most advanced fighter of its time when it made its first flight in 1936, participated with great success in the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War and remained in service throughout the Second World War, until the German surrender in 1945.
Its designer, Willi Messerschmitt sought to have the smallest possible fuselage while mounting the most powerful engine available at the time.
The Bf 109 had numerous improvements throughout its career. About 2,000 E-type “Emil” aircraft were put into service and proved to be very effective in contributing to the area supremacy of the first Werhmacht campaigns in Polish or French territory and, later, they also fought over the British skies during the Battle of Britain in a head-to-head confrontation with the British Spitfire.
The E-3 (reproduced in this 1/48 Tamiya kit) was powered by a 1,100 hp Daimler-Benz Db601 engine and was armed with two Oerlikon cannons in the wings (20 mm) and two 7.92 mm MG-17 light machine guns mounted on the engine.
