The mercenaries of Charles I’s imperial army, also known as Landsknechte Landsknechtewere highly skilled and famous soldiers during the 15th and 16th centuries. These men, hired to fight in the wars of the Holy Roman Empire, were noted for their colorful uniforms and their skill in combat with pikes and two-handed swords. In winter, their clothing was adapted to the extreme cold of military campaigns. Their winter uniforms consisted of quilted jackets and heavy woolen capes, designed to protect them from the cold temperatures. In addition, they wore high, lined boots and leather gloves. Although their appearance was still showy, functionality dominated these garments. Some wore lined hats or cloth-covered helmets to conserve heat. The Landsknechte played a crucial role in conflicts such as the Italian wars, standing out for their discipline on the battlefield and their ability to adapt to various weather conditions and combat tactics.
