The Macchi MC.205 Veltro was an Italian fighter developed during World War II, considered one of the best fighter aircraft produced by Italy. Designed by Mario Castoldi, the MC.205 was an evolution of the MC.202 Folgore, but equipped with a German-built Daimler-Benz DB 605A engine, which gave it greater power and speed, reaching up to 640 km/h (400 mph). The aircraft was armed with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns and, in later versions, with 20 mm cannons, making it an effective platform for both air combat and ground attack missions. Introduced in 1943, the Veltro was employed by the Regia Aeronautica and, after the armistice, by Italian forces on both sides of the conflict. It participated in key battles, such as the defense of Italy against Allied bombers. Although produced in limited numbers due to lack of resources, the MC.205 was highly respected by its adversaries for its maneuverability and performance.
