The Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) was an elite British unit created in 1940 during World War II, specialized in operations behind enemy lines in North Africa. Composed of highly trained volunteers, the LRDG performed reconnaissance, sabotage and support to other special forces such as the SAS. They operated in small mobile groups, using modified light vehicles, such as Chevrolet trucks, adapted for the desert. Equipped with machine guns, mortars and minimal supplies, they moved through inhospitable terrain. The LRDG’s ability to navigate the desert and attack strategic targets was key to the North African campaign.
