In February 1936 Ferdinand Porsche designed his first prototype of what Nazi Germany dubbed “the people’s car”, the first Volkswagen “Beetle” in history. However, the political situation leading up to World War II turned the situation around and all Volkswagen production plants began to build military vehicles.
In November 1938, a military vehicle inspired by the civilian model was introduced, this car was named “Kübelwagen Type 82”. It had an air-cooled 4-cylinder engine with a capacity of 985cc that allowed it to reach a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). Used during the war as a reconnaissance and officer transport vehicle, the Kübelwagen fought on all fronts of the conflict, from Africa to Russia, being one of the military vehicles with the largest production in Nazi Germany (almost 51,000 of them were built until the end of WWII).
