During the Hundred Years’ War, the French army engaged the English in a series of decisive battles. The French infantry consisted of pikemen and archers, while the heavy cavalry constituted the main shock force. Although the French suffered some major defeats in the war, such as at the Battle of Crécy and the Battle of Agincourt, they eventually succeeded in driving the English out of France.
