Britain declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939. At first the British Army was a small, motorized and well-trained force (known as the Expeditionary Corps). As the war progressed the army grew through general conscription. The backbone of the British Army was its infantry, with a total of 38 infantry divisions engaged in combat during the war. British troops generally received the Lee Enfield rifle, the fastest firing military bolt-action rifle of the era, capable of firing up to 30 rounds per minute.
