Roman gladiators were trained combatants who fought in arenas for the entertainment of the public. Among the various categories of gladiators, those who wore closed helmets, such as murmillos or secuutores, stood out for their intimidating appearance and advanced protection. Closed helmets were usually made of bronze or iron, with a perforated visor that allowed vision and breathing while fully protecting the fighter’s head and face. These pieces of armor, decorated with crests or symbolic motifs, not only had a defensive function, but also projected the gladiator’s identity in the spectacle. Close-helmeted gladiators were often paired against lightly armed opponents, such as retiarii, creating contrasting and exciting combats. Although they were slaves, prisoners of war or convicted criminals, some gladiators achieved fame and prestige for their skill in the arena, becoming admired figures in Roman society.
