The Totenkopf Division was one of the most recognized -and controversial- units of the German Waffen-SS during World War II. Formed in 1939 with personnel from concentration camps, it participated in various campaigns such as France (1940), the Eastern Front, and the defense of Germany in the last years of the conflict. Its emblem, a skull, symbolized its name: “Death’s Head”. Despite its reputation for ferocity in combat, the division was implicated in war crimes, which deeply marked its legacy. It operated with armored, artillery and mechanized infantry units, being considered an elite unit.
