Description

“Pioneers” is the name given to sapper units during World War II. These units, which were distributed both in the Wehrmacht and in the Waffen SS, had as main objective the realization of engineering works to, for the most part, eliminate obstacles (mines, anti-tank elements), cut off the enemy (destruction of infrastructures such as bridges) or open the way for own units (installation of bridges or roads).

Within the sapper units, there was an elite group known as“Sturmpioners” (literally translated: assault sappers) whose main objective was to execute complicated actions, such as the capture of a fortification, or the fording of a river protected by the enemy.
