The Battle of Montecassino, in World War II, was a key engagement between Allied and German forces. Montecassino, an ancient monastery in Italy, was the scene of bloody clashes in 1944. The Allies sought to take the position, but the German fortification, defended by elite paratrooper units, resisted fiercely. After heavy air and ground bombardment, Allied forces captured Montecassino in May.

This victory paved the way to Rome. However, the bombing of the monastery sparked debates about the destruction of cultural heritage.
