Germany entered World War I on August 1, 1914, declaring war on Russia. On August 3 and 4, it also declared war on France and the British Empire. The Germans fought on the Western, Eastern, Italian, and Balkan fronts. The German infantry was armed with standard Mauser 98 breech-loading rifles, as well as Mauser, Luger and Dreyse pistols. Beginning in 1916, German soldiers began using Stielhandgranate anti-personnel grenades. The MG 08 heavy machine gun, a German version of the Maxim, was used to support the infantry. This weapon was especially effective during so-called trench warfare, instilling fear in Entente infantry attacks. At the end of World War I, Germany designed and adopted its first submachine gun, the MP18, which was used in the last battles of the conflict.
