The AMR 35 ZT was a light reconnaissance tank developed by France in the 1930s, designed to operate with cavalry units. Manufactured by Renault, this vehicle was an evolution of the AMR 33, improved in speed, armament and armor. The AMR 35 ZT was armed with a 7.5 mm machine gun or a 25 mm cannon in later versions, and had a top speed of 55 km/h, making it suitable for scouting and fast reconnaissance missions. Its armor, however, was thin (up to 13 mm), sufficient only to protect against small arms. The AMR 35 ZT was employed in the early years of World War II, mainly during the German invasion of 1940. Although its maneuverability and speed were appreciated, its light armament and limited armor made it vulnerable to the better-equipped German armored forces. After the fall of France, many AMR 35s were captured and some were reused by the Germans for secondary tasks.
