In the spring of 1937, based on experience gained in the Spanish Civil War, the German Technical Department developed requirements for an attack aircraft.
This aircraft was to be twin-engine, small in size, with reliable armored protection and powerful armament, intended for direct support of troops on the battlefield and to break through deeply staggered enemy defenses.
Projects of four companies were considered in a competition, including Focke-Wulf.
Within this framework, the specialists of this company modified their Fw 189V-1, equipped with Argus As 410 engines, into a two-seat attack aircraft.
The main modification consisted of replacing the central nacelle with an armored cockpit for the pilot and gunner.
Several variants were produced, and the third aircraft of the experimental series, the Fw 189V-6, became the Fw 189C attack aircraft.
It was equipped with more powerful engines and armament that included two 20 mm MG-FF guns and four MG17 machine guns, while the defense consisted of MG81 machine guns.
Despite good test results at Rechlin in the autumn of 1940, it did not enter production, being replaced by the Hs 129A as the Luftwaffe’s main attack aircraft.
