Gruppe Fehrmann (corresponding to model reference 2202) was an improvised German unit formed in 1945 during the last months of World War II.
The unit, under the command of Hermann Fehrmann, consisted of tanks that had been decommissioned for repair or modernization.
Due to shortage of resources and time, these vehicles were quickly reconditioned and sent to the front. Michael Wittmann (commander of Tiger I reference 2201) was one of the most famous German tank commanders during World War II.
He was born on April 22, 1914 in Bavaria, Germany, and joined the Waffen-SS in 1936.
Wittmann excelled primarily as a Tiger I tank commander, being recognized for his tactical skill and leadership in combat.
His best known action occurred on June 13, 1944 during the Battle of Villers-Bocage in Normandy, where, in a daring attack, he destroyed several British tanks, armored vehicles and anti-tank guns in a matter of minutes, temporarily halting the Allied advance.
This fact cemented his fame as one of the most lethal tank commanders of the war.
Wittmann was decorated with the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, one of the highest German military distinctions.
However, he was killed on August 8, 1944 in combat near Cintheaux, Normandy, when his Tiger was destroyed.
