HMS Glowworm, a British G-class destroyer, was noted for her bravery in World War II. In April 1940, while on patrol, she engaged the German heavy cruiser “Admiral Hipper”, despite the disadvantage, the Glowworm undertook a bold attack, damaging the Hipper, which returned fire and severely damaged it, attempted to envelop the Hipper, forcing the German cruiser to retreat. This heroic act enabled other British ships to reach safety. Tragically, the Glowworm sank shortly thereafter, with the loss of most of its crew. His bravery and sacrifice were recognized and celebrated in the British Royal Navy.
