The cuirassiers were an elite cavalry destined to break through as a shock force between enemy formations. During the Napoleonic Wars, Napoleon’s French army was made up of Saxon cuirassier regiments: the Corps Guards and the Zastrow Cuirassiers. In the battle of Borodino, these regiments participated in the attack on the village of Semenovskaya, where they managed to break three Russian infantry squares. At the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, the Saxon cuirassiers became famous for their courageous attacks against the enemy.
