Polikarpov in 1933, this cantilever-wing monoplane with retractable landing gear was a milestone in aviation. The type 18 version, equipped with the M-62 engine, entered service in 1939, participating in the Soviet-Japanese conflict on the Khalhin-Gol River and in the Winter War against Finland. Later, the type 24 and 28 versions were produced, protagonists of the intense combats at the beginning of the war against Germany.
