The Fw 190D was the final mass-produced version of the legendary Focke-Wulf company aircraft, which had numerous variants with different armament and engines. Although commonly associated with the final phase of the war, its development began much earlier. As early as 1941, it became apparent that German fighters would need to face Allied bombers equipped with supercharged engines capable of maintaining high power at high altitudes, exceeding 6,000 meters. To remain competitive, Focke-Wulf proposed to the German Air Ministry a version that could perform better at those altitudes. The first tests with the radial engine (Fw 190B) were not promising, so they focused on in-line engines, such as the Fw 190C with the DB603 engine. However, this version had technical problems, until advances in the Junkers Jumo 213 engine offered hope. In 1942, the first prototype with the new engine was built, but its installation shifted the center of gravity, causing instability. The design team solved the problem by lengthening the fuselage and increasing vertical stability. Finally, in 1944, the Fw 190D-9 with the Jumo 213A engine entered production, becoming one of the last successful Luftwaffe fighters. It is estimated that between 1500 and 1700 units were produced.
