The Roman cavalry is not as famous as their legions on foot, among other things, because their riders did not yet wear stirrups, which made mounted combat not as effective and decisive as it was later.
The “equites” were equipped with helmets, leg guards, round shield, long swords, daggers and in some cases lighter spears than the “Pilum” of the infantry.
