The Byzantine catafracts were a heavy cavalry unit inherited from Roman and Eastern military traditions, particularly from the Parthians and Sassanids. Their name, derived from the Greek kataphraktos (“fully covered”), reflects their main characteristic: both rider and horse were protected by full scale or lamellar armor, providing an almost impenetrable defense. Equipped with long spears (kontos), swords and, in some cases, composite bows, the cataphracts combined shock power with tactical flexibility. In combat, their charge was devastating, capable of breaking enemy formations. In addition, their discipline and training made them suitable for complex maneuvers, essential in Byzantine strategy. Used primarily in major battles, they were a crucial force in engagements against Persians, Arabs, Slavs and other threats. Although costly to maintain, the cataphracts symbolized Byzantine military might and their ability to adapt to the changing war conditions of the Middle Ages.
