Medieval castles were defensive and residential structures that emerged in Europe during the Middle Ages, especially between the 9th and 15th centuries. Initially built of wood and earth, castles evolved to be made of stone, which increased their resistance to attack and the passage of time. Their design responded to military needs, with elements such as walls, towers, moats and drawbridges that made access difficult for invaders. The central core of the castle, known as the keep, housed the feudal lord’s quarters and served as a last refuge in case of siege. The castles were also centers of administration and symbolized the power of their lords. With the advance of artillery, especially cannons, castles lost their defensive effectiveness in the Renaissance, but many remain as witnesses to rich medieval history, attracting scholars and tourists alike.
