The“Niña” was one of the three caravels that participated in Christopher Columbus’ first voyage in 1492, together with the “Pinta” and the “Santa María”. Owned by the Pinzón brothers, it was Columbus ‘ favorite ship because of its maneuverability and resistance. Originally called “Santa Clara”, its nickname “Niña” comes from its owner, Juan Niño. The caravel was approximately 20 meters long and displaced about 60 tons. Her design included lateen sails, ideal for sailing upwind, which made her suitable for ocean exploration. In the historic voyage, the “Niña” played a crucial role, being the vessel that took Columbus back to Spain after the shipwreck of the “Santa María”. Subsequently, the “Niña” participated in other voyages of exploration to the New World. Its robustness and versatility made it a symbol of the Age of Discovery.
