Description

The very interesting version of the T72 represented in 1/35 scale by Tamiya is the one developed by Saddam Hussein’s Army during the 80s.

The T72M1, known by the over-name Asad Babil (or Lion of Babylon), is an attempt by Saddam-ruled Iraq to make a sophisticated upgrade of the T72 (Soviet Car largely intended for export) with in-house components developed within the country, although it has been questioned on numerous occasions that most of the vehicle’s components were not actually being produced outside Iraq.

The T72M1 weighs 41 tons, has a crew of only 3 men, reaches a maximum speed of 50 km/h (cross-country), has a 300 mm armor and its main weapon is a 2A46M 125 mm smoothbore cannon and as secondary weapons a 7.62 mm PKMT coaxial machine gun and a 12.7 mm NSVT anti-aircraft machine gun.
