Description

The KV-2 was one of the first steel “monsters” designed by the Soviet Union during World War II.

During the Winter War that the Russian army fought with the Finns in 1940, the Red Army saw the usefulness of having a tank with a large caliber gun that could assault the defensive positions of the Mannerhein line, as a result of this need arose the KV-2.

The KV-2 was based on the KV-1 chassis on which was mounted a 152.4 mm M-10S gunTo solve this weakness, a larger turret had to be built, which consequently increased the profile of the original vehicle, making it an easier target. shielding at 75 mm. The KV-2 was a very well armored tank for its time but also very heavy(52 tons) and its W-2K, 600 hp V-12 diesel engine did not allow it to reach road speeds of more than 30 km/h.

The KV-2 had similar problems to its brother KV-1, it was slow and too heavy for its transmission system, which caused breakdowns and reduced maneuverability. Even so, during the Barbarossa operation, the encounters the Germans had with this tank caused them great setbacks and the conclusion that they needed bigger and better armed tanks.
