The Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) Ausf G, produced by Alkett in April 1943, is one of the most recognized and numerous variants of the German assault gun used during World War II. Initially developed as an infantry support vehicle, the StuG III evolved to play a key anti-tank role due to its low profile, mobility and powerful armament.
Ausf G was the last and most produced version of the StuG III, with significant improvements over its predecessors. Equipped with a 75 mm StuK 40 L/48 StuK gun, Ausf G had considerable penetration capability, allowing it to effectively engage Allied tanks. Its frontal armor was reinforced to 80 mm, providing better protection against enemy attacks.
In terms of design, the Ausf G incorporated a larger superstructure to better accommodate the four-member crew. Side skirts (Schürzen) were also added to protect the tracks and chassis against anti-tank shells.
The StuG III Ausf G was deployed on all fronts, from the East in the Russian steppes to the West in Normandy. Its production continued until the end of the war, with approximately 8,000 units manufactured. The combination of its firepower, armor and versatility made it one of the most effective and feared armored vehicles of the Wehrmacht.
