Big Gustav and his partner Dora were the names given to the two gigantic cannons used by the Germans during World War II. With a caliber of 80cm each, both were mounted on railroad tracks.
They were developed at the end of 1934 by the German company Krupp with the express purpose of being used as siege weapons, that is, to be able to break highly fortified positions, specifically the Maginot Line. Due to the German strategy for the Battle of France, which consisted of outflanking the Maginot Line by advancing through the Ardennes, neither of the two super guns was used on the western front, although they were present at some fortification sites on the eastern front.
Doran and Gustav weighed 1,350 tons and could fire 7,000 kg bombs at effective ranges of 37 km.
