The Luftwaffe, the German air force during World War II, was designed from its inception to carry out active offensive actions. At the heart of its strike capability were bomber squadrons, organized into groups which, in turn, formed part of larger bombing wings. A typical Luftwaffe bomber group airfield had runways, parking areas, refueling and maintenance points for the bombers, accommodations for crews and ground personnel, ammunition depots, command offices and a flight control center, as well as communication facilities. The perimeter of the airfield was usually fenced and protected with checkpoints and barriers, and mines could even be laid around it for security reasons. The excellent organization of the ground service ensured the efficient deployment of the bombers throughout the conflict.
