The “Maultier” (literal translation of Mule) was a modification made by the German army during World War II. Following the invasion of the USSR during Operation Barbarossa, the Germans discovered that the motorization of their army was not effective, as many of their trucks (4-wheelers) were stuck in the mud and snow during the autumn and winter of 1941. This situation led the Wehrmacht to equip their vehicles with chains, so that they could negotiate difficult terrain.
