The Byzantine light cavalry was a key force within the Byzantine Empire’s army, designed to fulfill scouting, harassment and ambush roles. Derived from Roman military traditions and enriched with influences from neighboring peoples, this unit combined speed, maneuverability and combat effectiveness. The light knights, known as hippikon, were equipped with weapons such as composite bows, javelins and short swords. They often wore light leather or lamella armor, which allowed them to maintain great mobility. Their skill with the bow, similar to that of steppe horsemen, gave them an advantage in ranged combat, while their ability to retreat quickly allowed them to avoid prolonged confrontations. These troops were vital in frontier campaigns and against enemies such as the Arabs, Slavs or Bulgars. Their strategic use, along with their disciplined training, highlighted Byzantine military sophistication.
