During the early years of the Second World War, the british infantry regimental headquarters was headed by a chief of staff with the rank of lieutenant colonel, in addition to two senior officers, an adjutant with the rank of captain, four junior officers and four sergeants (scribe, liaison officer, etc.). The headquarters had the task of directing the regimental units and interacting with neighboring units and higher headquarters. The staff officers were armed primarily with Enfield No. 2 Mk. 1 or Webley Mk. 4 and traditionally carried officers’ batons, NCOs had Lee-Enfield No. 1 Mk. Z and wore gas mask sleeves on their chests in the ready position.
