The Luftwaffe was equipped with a wide variety of weapons of different types and purposes. The main German bombs of World War II had weights of 50, 250, 500, 1000, 1800 and 2500 kilograms. The most common were high-explosive bombs, which were classified as SC-type thin-walled and SD-type thick-walled bombs with side detonators. To reduce the depth of ground penetration and increase the blast wave, some bombs could be equipped with a ring at the front. In addition, some bombs had elongated detonators known as “Dinort rods” (in German, Dinort-stäbe), which caused detonation before the bomb hit the ground.
The bomb carriers included both classic bombers such as the Ju 88 or He 111, as well as attack aircraft and fighters that could carry bombs of up to 500 kilograms on their carriers. Naval aviation, in addition to bombs, used torpedoes in various theaters of war, such as the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and northern Europe.
