The Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 Sparviero was an Italian medium bomber developed in the 1930s and used extensively during World War II. Recognized for its distinctive three-engine design and hump-shaped fuselage, the SM.79 began its life as a fast airliner before being adapted for military operations. The Sparviero, nicknamed “The Hawk”, proved to be versatile and effective, especially as a torpedo aircraft. Equipped with Piaggio P.XI or Alfa Romeo engines, it could reach a top speed of 430 km/h and carry up to 1,200 kg of bombs or two torpedoes. During the conflict, the SM.79 excelled in missions against Allied convoys in the Mediterranean, earning a fearsome reputation. Despite its achievements, its design became obsolete in the face of more modern aircraft. Nevertheless, it remained in service until the 1950s, being one of the most emblematic bombers of the Regia Aeronautica.
