During the 1930s, the German company Henschel developed the Hs-123 attack biplane, designed to provide close air support. It entered service in 1935 and made its operational debut in the Spanish Civil War with the Condor Legion. Equipped with an 880 hp BMW radial engine, it reached 340 km/h and could carry a decent war load. Despite its proven reliability, it was technologically outclassed during World War II, assuming secondary roles, especially on the eastern front, in night missions and harassment actions.
