The Battle of Anzio, launched on January 22, 1944, was an Allied amphibious operation on the west coast of Italy during World War II. Its objective was to break the German Gustav defensive line and allow the advance towards Rome. Although the landing was initially successful and met little resistance, the subsequent lack of advance allowed German forces to regroup and launch fierce counterattacks. The area became a static and bloody front for months. Finally, in May 1944, the Allies succeeded in advancing. Operation Anzio was costly, but key to the liberation of central Italy.
