The Musashi was one of the most powerful battleships ever built, belonging to the Yamato class of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II.
With a displacement of 72,800 tons and armed with nine 460 mm guns, the Musashi and her sister ship Yamato represented the pinnacle of Japanese shipbuilding.
Launched in 1940 and commissioned in 1942, the Musashi was designed to dominate the Pacific, but her impact was limited due to the shift in naval strategy toward aviation and aircraft carriers.
The Musashi participated in the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Battle of Leyte Gulf, where she met her fate.
On October 24, 1944, she was attacked by U.S. aircraft, taking more than 20 torpedoes and 17 bombs before sinking.
Her loss marked a turning point in naval warfare, symbolizing the decline of the great battleships in the face of the age of aviation.
