Description

In 1934, the Imperial Japanese Navy began plans to build a super battleship. The plan was brought to fruition when on August 8, 1940 the Yamato was floated.

One of the most notable features of the impressive Japanese super battleship was her 9 x 46 cm guns, the largest ever mounted on a ship had an effective range of 41 km and could penetrate up to 43 cm of armor at a distance of more than 30 km. Each of these guns weighed 166 tons and had a rate of fire of 2 shots per minute. It was also equipped with twelve 15.5cm guns, some of which were later converted to anti-aircraft guns. The Yamato displaced 65,000 tons and averaged 263m in length.

Admiral Yamamoto directed Japanese operations at the Battle of Midway from the Yamato’s command post, although the Yamato never saw combat during the battle. He later fought at Guadalcanal, the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. She was finally sunk on April 7, 1945 by a massive U.S. aerial bombardment.
