During OperationOverlord, the code name given by the Allies to the Normandy landings (June 6, 1944), the small French village of Sainte-Mere-Eglise was of key strategic importance. It was an enclave crossed by numerous roads that would have allowed the Germans to speed up the arrival of reinforcements and supplies to the beaches of Omaha and Utah. It was this strategic importance that prompted the Allies to drop parachute elements of the 82nd and 101st US Airborne Divisions on the small French village, where they met Wehrmacht forces and engaged in fierce combat.
