The Jacobite Rising of 1745 was an attempt to re-establish the Catholic Stuart dynasty on the British throne. Led by Charles Edward Stuart, known as “Bonnie Prince Charlie,” the Jacobites confronted the British government at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. This battle marked the end of their hopes. The Jacobite army, composed mainly of Highland Scottish soldiers, was defeated by the British army. The repression that followed the Rising had a lasting impact on Scottish culture and society, marking the decline of clan influence in Scotland.
