The Second World War saw the birth and proliferation of self-propelled artillery by many of the contending countries, this was due to the need to provide cover for armored units. During the conflict the French used some of these American-made vehicles, such as the M7 Priest or the M12. When the war ended and France had the opportunity to reinforce its armed forces with its own material, it continued with the idea of producing self-propelled artillery vehicles, one of these first models was the AMX Mk.61.
