In the mid-1990s the JGSDF (“Japanese Ground Self Defense Force”) began designing a highly mobile light armored vehicle model to replace the obsolete HMV Hayate and Type 73. This new vehicle was to be effective in the fight against terrorism and guerrilla warfare. It was put into service in 2002.
The JGSDF Light Vehicle weighs 4.5 tn, can carry 4 people, and is powered by a 4-cylinder 160 hp diesel engine that allows it to reach maximum road speeds of 100 km/h. Due to its durability, maneuverability and small size the Japanese Light Armored Vehicle is excellent for reconnaissance missions or personnel transport in hostile areas.
