During the autumn of 1942 the German 6th Army identifiedMamaev Hill as the decisive geographical center for the capture of the city of Stalingrad. The reason for this was that the hill was an elevated point, the best location from which the entire urban radius of Stalingrad could be observed and controlled.
The battle for the capture of the hill, between the 6th German Army and the 62nd Russian Army, was one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War.
